Vermiculite insulation & Asbestos
Many homes inspected are found to contain vermiculite insulation in the attics. Vermiculite insulation was mostly used because of its insulating qualities and fire resistance. The concern with the product is mostly due to product being produced from the Libby mine in Mobtana from the 1920's to 1990. This particular mine supplied much of the world with vermiculite insulation.
The concern was that the ore mined from this time period and used for insulation may contain amphibole asbestos. Asbestos contained in this insulation may be very low quantities, but when disturbed still present a potential health risk. I refer you to two sources of information.
CMHC. About your house - Asbestos.
and
Health Canada. It's your health; Vermicuite Insulation containing Amphibole Asbestos.
This is a close up of large vermiculite I took in an attic I was recently inspecting. (From the hatch)
